The Rev. Dr. Sharon Watkins
On Monday, February 8, registration begins at 4 PM at University Christian Church. The worship service will be at 7:30 PM on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday with the Rev. Dr. Sharon Watkins preaching as part of the Wells Sermons Series.Sharon E. Watkins serves as General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada. She is an inspirational preacher, teacher and facilitator who shares her considerable skills in a variety of religious and ecumenical settings.
She is a member of the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches, serves on the WCC's Permanent Committee for Consensus and Collaboration, and was a representative at the WCC’s General Assembly in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Most recently, Dr. Watkins preached at the National Prayer Service in Washington, DC on January 21, 2009 and has also been named to President Obama's Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.
She has pastored churches in Oklahoma, Indiana, and Connecticut. She held positions as adjunct professor and Director of Student Services at Phillips Theological Seminary and Associate Vice-President for University Relations at Phillips University. She holds a D. Min. from Phillips Theological Seminary, a M.Div. from Yale Divinity School, and a Bachelor's degree in French and Economics from Butler University. Watkins is married to the Rev. Dr. Rick Lowery and they have two children, Bethany and Christopher.
