RANGE, which stands for Research, Adventure, Nature, Geology and Ecology, is a 16-acre outdoor area, located behind the Varsity Gymnasium. It is used to teach students about conservation, how wetlands filter water, the importance of habitat and the stewardship of resources. The RANGE Class, taught by Kimberlee Long and Greg Nowlin, is a senior level class but the learning concepts are made available to our K-12 students. The seniors often include children in the lower grades in their adventures.
Students become a part of the planning and conservation of our land and water. Utilizing the 16 acres of natural habitat, our students are able to learn what it means to be stewards, and to become more responsible for the conservation of our natural resources. Our own land is enhanced, our waterways are studied, and our flora and fauna are recognized and cataloged for further studies. Students are currently composting, building flower gardens, creating a field manual and taking Lower School students out to RANGE to study butterflies and birds and seed wild flowers.
