Historiographer Report
by David Leedy, Historiographer
The Archives of The Episcopal Diocese of Fort Worth consists of four distinct sections: History Library, Documents, Photographs, and Ephimera. You may expect an announcement regarding the History Library of a major acquisition within the coming months. At this time, there are no photographs, which have been received by the archives for storage and preservation. We do have some ephimera, the latest being a gift by John Dosher of his CD – "Contemporary Eucharist of The Episcopal Church Rite 2 with Hymns of Worship and Praise" by John E. Dosher. This report is about the Documents Section.
In addition to the documents forwarded to me one by one for the last six months, several months ago I was handed a box of documents when I attended an event at St. Luke’s in the Meadow. The box of documents, belonging to a deceased parishioner, primarily consisted of old parish newsletters, of which I retained only a few in their parish history file to indicate the life in that parish. I also retained several old parish annual reports as well as some of the Rector’s Christmas Letters.
Among the treasures I discovered in the box was the announcement dated September 26, 1985 that The Rev. Mart Gayland Pool had been called to be their new Rector and Headmaster of their School as well as an invitation to the celebration on October 20th and the service bulletin. I found "The Celebration of a New Ministry – The Institution of The Reverend James Taylor Horton, Jr." as rector of the church on October 18, 1978 as well as "The Order of Service for The Holy Eucharist and for the Ordination to the Diaconate" of John Allen Buchanan by the Right Reverend A. Donald Davies, Bishop of Dallas on November 9, 1970 at St. James Church in Texarkana and then a service bulletin with a date of October 22, 1972 instituting The Rev. John Buchanan as Rector of Saint Luke’s in the Meadow Episcopal Church. I also found documentation of the merger of St. Francis Episcopal Church, a mission church, with St. Luke’s. Another treasure I found was "The Ordination of a Deacon The Diocese of Dallas," dated June 28, 1980 where a young Frank Bryan Reeves was ordained. Finally, I was excited to find Vol. 1, No. 1 of the Diocesan Newsletter dated Lent 1983, which had yet to receive a formal name (the Diocese of Fort Worth began on January 1, 1983).
Below are listed the folders in the Documents section of the Archives. As with everything in the archives, they are available for study and research to all members of the diocese, clergy and lay. I note with some concern the parishes and faith communities for which we have no folders or very few documents in their folders. Please send copies of news clippings about your church as well as copies of anything that could possibly have historical value to me at the diocesan office. Also, when going through the effects of deceased parents, friends, or parishioners, remember that those dusty old documents and photographs may have some historical value to the diocese and give that "Old Historiographer" some joy in finding a new treasure.
